The Real Candidate

Stephen F. Hayes of The Weekly Standard has an interesting article in the latest issue detailing Sen. McCain’s campaign strategy now that he is the presumptive nominee. Regarding the type of events Sen. McCain will characteristically hold on the trail, Mr. Hayes writes that “most of his public events will be town halls, not speeches, something that will provide a stark contrast to the tightly controlled campaign of either Barack Obama or Hillary Clinton.”
This only goes to demonstrate that Sen. McCain is the real candidate in the race, largely avoiding the standard prepackaged stump speech read from a lectern and/or a telempropter. As he always has on the stump, Sen. McCain will instead interact with the voters, answering their questions and addressing their concerns.
Doing this would make most candidates nervous and their campaign managers and aides more nervous still. Only those at home in their own skin and confident in their own views and principles would be willing to take this approach.
Add it to the list of evidence showing that Sen. McCain is the real candidate in this race, willing to open himself up to the voter when his opponents assiduously determine themselves what the voter hears and sees.

Well said. This style has worked for him, and suits him well. Plus, we get some great wisecracks from Senator Mccain in this format!
