As proud I’m sure Howard Dean is of his ridiculously chopped and edited “McCain vs McCain” cartoon, Jake Tapper has a column that shows how the Screamer has a….nuanced opinion of American national defense
Dean released this statement today in response to John McCain’s television ad.
In response, Democratic National Committee chairman Howard Dean issued a statement, saying, “John McCain can try to reintroduce himself to the country, but he can’t change the fact that he cast aside his principles to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with President Bush the last seven years. While we honor McCain’s military service, the fact is Americans want a real leader who offers real solutions, not a blatant opportunist who doesn’t understand the economy and is promising to keep our troops in Iraq for 100 years.”
Contrast that with Howard Dean, circa 2004
“The real issue is this,” Dean said in March 2004, when endorsing formal rival Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass., “Who would you rather have in charge of the defense of the United States of America, a group of people who never served a day overseas in their life, or a guy who served his country honorably and has three Purple Hearts and a Silver Star on the battlefields of Vietnam?”
So what is it, Dean-o? Do we want to decorated and courageous, decorated war veteran in charge of our defense, or the man who offers “real solutions” like a playdate with Mahmoud Ahmadinejad?

I’m willing to get the debate started, even if I get called names…
Dean, like ALL political strategists, says what he thinks will win elections. Nobody cares if their guy flip flops, but woe be to the opposition who flip flops.
Dean led the Dems to a stunning victory in 2006, despite Rove’s promise of a permanent majority. He is to be taken seriously as a result. it remains to be seen if he can build on that success, or if it was just a fluke.
McCain, flip, Clinton, flop, Bush flip, Obama, flop…
Maybe they should just get it over with and change the name from the White House to the Waffle House.

Dean didn’t lead the Dems to anything in ‘06. If the Democratic Party couldn’t win Congress a year and a half ago then it no longer deserved to be a party. If anyone is responsible for ‘06 it was Rahm Emanuel and Chuck Schumer.’
