Barack Obama Figures Out New Line of Attack Against Palin…

September 3rd, 2008 at 06:23am Matt Margolis

…to run an ad attacking the McCain-Palin ticket over abortion.

Barack Obama has launched a broadside against John McCain’s opposition to abortion rights and moved one of the most divisive issues in modern American politics to the airwaves on a large scale for the first time in this presidential campaign.

Obama’s new radio ad, airing widely in at least seven swing states, tells voters McCain “will make abortion illegal.” It’s airing as McCain courts female voters with the addition of the staunchly anti-abortion governor of Alaska, Sarah Palin, to his ticket.

The funny thing about this, besides the obviously false accusations of the ad, is that the whole purpose of the ad is based on the premise that abortion is a women’s issue and women are, by default, pro-abortion.

Not so, according to national polls. But nevertheless, abortion has been one of those issues that Democrats strongly support, but have had to severely soften and moderate their public positions. Democrats aren’t ones for going on the campaign trail and advocating for abortion the way Planned Parenthood or NARAL do. No, they try to take a more conservative approach, and instead of elaborating on their pro-abortion position, they say they believe that unwanted pregnancies ought to be reduced. Of course, that doesn’t change the fact they support partial-birth abortion in private, or they support allow 12 year-olds to get abortions without parental consent or notification.

I think it’s awesome Obama has now made abortion an issue of the campaign. It will allow the McCain campaign to expose Obama’s positions on abortion, and show that his views are extreme, and remind people of Obama’s claim that protecting unborn children would be above his pay grade if he were president.

If you read the hundreds of posts from Clinton supporters sites, feminist sites, etc., they are finally realizing that their right to choose is not the only reason to vote for Obama. They are furious about the disgusting tactics the Obama campaign has used against Sarah Palin - because it brings back memories of what was done to Hillary. Many are voting for McCain-Palin, not voting at all, or writing in Hillary’s name (all three options are a vote AGAINST The one).

First of all Matt. The article you link is from 2003. Try something a little more recent…

The latest Harris Poll finds that support for Roe v. Wade has increased fairly significantly in a relatively short time. A majority – 56 percent – now favors the U.S. Supreme Court decision, the highest level since 1998 and an increase of seven percentage points from just last year when a slender 49 to 47 percent is supported the decision. Furthermore, only 20 percent of U.S. adults favor not permitting a woman to get an abortion under any circumstances.

20% favor no abortion under ANY circumstances. Isn’t that Palin’s view?

    Palin:

Palin believes abortion is only acceptable if a woman’s life is in danger. During a debate in 2006, the candidates were asked what they would do if their own daughters became pregnant through rape. Palin’s response: “I would choose life.”

And McCain (from his own website):

John McCain believes Roe v. Wade is a flawed decision that must be overturned, and as president he will nominate judges who understand that courts should not be in the business of legislating from the bench.

Those sure sound like comments that would indicate they are for making it illegal. Meanwhile you claim “the obviously false accusations of the ad”.

Also, your comment “the ad is based on the premise that abortion is a women’s issue and women are, by default, pro-abortion.” is silly and it is what YOU want to believe.
Nobody is “pro-abortion”. Nobody thinks it is a good idea and wants to go get one on a regular basis. Nobody is pushing anyone to get an abortion. Those are all just far right-wing talking points because to you people there is no gray area. It is strictly black and white and that is it.
No… they are not pro-abortion… They are pro-choice. The opportunity to make that decision based on their own circumstances. Why the hell should a 72 year old white man tell women what the can or can not do when it comes to their situation?

    Kimberly:
They are furious about the disgusting tactics the Obama campaign has used against Sarah Palin
“Disgusting tactics” used against Sarah Palin?? What exactly did Obama do that was anything against Sarah Palin? This is the first ad mentioning her.

    Joe,
It really shows your lack of knowledge… The executive branch cannot now or ever legislate laws. The president does select Supreme court justices though and that may be what you are afraid of. Roe v. Wade is flawed because it was because of activist judges reading something in the constitution that just is not there. Show me just where the constitution guarantees a woman control of killing a baby in her womb.

    neil,
thanks for that great comeback of “It really shows your lack of knowledge”. You do sound like a true idiot. How is that? Are we now just calling people names? Grow up please.

Did I say the executive branch makes laws? I’ll help you… no I didn’t.

And as for what I am afraid of is someone that may get into office that reflect the views of people like you who just call Supreme Court Justices “Activist Judges” just because they ruled against what you believe in. Guess what, if justices now get in and overturn Roe v Wade, why are THEY not “Activist Judges”? It would only stand to reason that it hasn’t been overturned yet, so new justices that rule to overturn it must only be doing so to be an “Activist Judge”.

Grow up and come up with a legit argument instead of just calling people names.
