Gender Politic’s Role Reversal

Well it’s a new day! Mayor Guiliani and Governor Huckabee are angered by the main stream media’s sexism towards Governor Palin, and Gloria Steinem is belittling the experience of the first ever female Republican VP nominee.
Mayor Giuliani’s Convention Speech, “How dare they question whether Palin will have enough time to spend with her children while vice president? When do they ever ask a man that question?”
“Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee on Thursday accused the mainstream news media of engaging in “shocking” sexism in its coverage of Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin as the GOP’s new vice presidential nominee.”
Gloria Stienem, “This isn’t the first time a boss has picked an unqualified woman just because she agrees with him and opposes everything most other women want and need.”
What’s troubling with Ms. Stienem’s postition is two fold. First, she’s undermining the Republican’s #2 for lack of experience when the Dems #1 has the thinnest resume of any Presidential nominee in history. Second, she’s determining what is important to all women. Yet again, all that is supposed to matter to women is equal pay legislation (which many believe is ineffective) and the issue of choice. National security, energy, health care, foreign policy, all apparently not issues for women.
On the other hand, two political figures who no one would have predicted becoming champions of women’s rights are calling the media on their bizarre obsession with Governor Palin’s family life. The media’s double standard has been so blatant that people across the political spectrum (with the possible exception of a handful of people way to the left) are telling the media to knock it off and focus on issues.

KM, what do you call Palin and Giuliani doing about Obama’s Community Organizing? Wouldn’t that be belittling Obama’s past? Saying that Obama’s resume is so very thin would certainly be belittling his 4 years in the U.S. Senate (including a spot on the Foreign Relations committee, Committee on Veteran’s Affairs, Committee on Health, Education and Labor, and the Committee on Homeland Security) not to mention his previous 6 years in the Illinois State Senate.
What is it when Palin and Giuliani mock and laugh at Obama being a Community Organizer and getting all those cheers and laughs at the GOP convention, wouldn’t that be belittling the first black candidate? Instead of “sexism towards Governor Palin”, would we call that “racism towards Senator Obama”?
Maybe we could just call it Palin and Giuliani being fools and making it sound like Obama is going straight from Community Organizer to running for President.
As for Palin as the VP nominee, I don’t agree with those that question if she should be concentrating on her family instead of politics or not. That is not up to anyone else to judge. If she feels she can do it, then all the power to her.
My problem with Palin is not that she is a mother of 5. My problem is that she is incredibly unqualified to be next in line to a 72 yr old that has had 4 bouts with cancer.
By the way… I think every post I end up asking… When do we talk about the issues that are actually going to affect the average American??

I guess I’m looking at it from a different perspective. Gloria Steinem is supposedly all about the progress of women. Now we have a presidential candidate who’s a first term Senator and a vice presidential candidate who’s a first term Governor and she’s decided the first term Governor is not as qualified as the first term Senator. Wonder why?
I find it terribly ironic that it’s Giuliani and Huckabee that are calling the media sexist, while Steinem takes shots at Palin. The media has had a melt down; my opinion is that it’s more based on bias than gender, but I do think it is worth addressing as their behavior over the last week and a half has been ridiculous.
I also love this old man line they trot out with McCain. Like he’s going to swear an oath to the presidency then turn around and keel over. I’m much more comfortable with the less experienced candidate being at the two slot than the one slot. All odds are that in the unlikely circumstance that a vp
has to take over the presidency they will have had some experience as vp before becoming president. Not to mention that Palin has executive experience. She knows the energy issue inside and out. She’s run a small business, she’s booted out entrenched incumbents, and her resume is just as strong if not stronger than the Dems #1.
BTW - The Obama campaign should stop whining about the community organizer crack. He was referring to her as just a mayor the prior weekend; her counter strike was simply far more powerful than his jab.
