Barack Obama Figures Out New Line of Attack Against Palin…

…to run an ad attacking the McCain-Palin ticket over abortion.

Barack Obama has launched a broadside against John McCain’s opposition to abortion rights and moved one of the most divisive issues in modern American politics to the airwaves on a large scale for the first time in this presidential campaign.

Obama’s new radio ad, airing widely in at least seven swing states, tells voters McCain “will make abortion illegal.” It’s airing as McCain courts female voters with the addition of the staunchly anti-abortion governor of Alaska, Sarah Palin, to his ticket.

The funny thing about this, besides the obviously false accusations of the ad, is that the whole purpose of the ad is based on the premise that abortion is a women’s issue and women are, by default, pro-abortion.

Not so, according to national polls. But nevertheless, abortion has been one of those issues that Democrats strongly support, but have had to severely soften and moderate their public positions. Democrats aren’t ones for going on the campaign trail and advocating for abortion the way Planned Parenthood or NARAL do. No, they try to take a more conservative approach, and instead of elaborating on their pro-abortion position, they say they believe that unwanted pregnancies ought to be reduced. Of course, that doesn’t change the fact they support partial-birth abortion in private, or they support allow 12 year-olds to get abortions without parental consent or notification.

I think it’s awesome Obama has now made abortion an issue of the campaign. It will allow the McCain campaign to expose Obama’s positions on abortion, and show that his views are extreme, and remind people of Obama’s claim that protecting unborn children would be above his pay grade if he were president.
